What Does a Tummy Tuck Do?
Excess Skin and Fat
A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and tissue and repositions the remaining skin to create a smoother abdominal contour.
Abdominal Muscle Repair
A standard tummy tuck includes repair of separated or weakened abdominal muscles to create a firmer abdominal wall.
Abdominal Contouring
The procedure improves the overall shape and contour of the abdomen by addressing excess skin, fat and abdominal muscle separation.
Liposuction
Liposuction is a separate procedure that removes targeted areas of excess fat and may be combined with a tummy tuck where appropriate. The upper abdomen, waist and/or back areas can often be treated at the same time, depending on your individual needs and the surgeon's assessment.
Important Note: Liposuction is not automatically included in every tummy tuck package and must be confirmed as part of your surgical plan.
Types of Tummy Tuck
The appropriate procedure depends on the amount and location of excess skin and your individual anatomy.
Standard Tummy Tuck
A standard tummy tuck addresses excess abdominal skin and some excess abdominal fat and includes abdominal muscle repair.
Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck focuses primarily on excess skin and laxity in the lower abdomen and is generally suitable for patients with more limited concerns.
Extended Tummy Tuck
An extended tummy tuck extends further around the sides of the abdomen and may be recommended where there is additional excess skin around the flanks.
Belt Lipectomy
A belt lipectomy is a more extensive body-contouring procedure that removes excess skin and tissue extending around the abdomen, flanks and lower back. It may be considered following significant weight loss.
A belt lipectomy creates a longer scar than a standard tummy tuck.
Tummy Tuck and Mons Pubis Contouring
Some patients have excess tissue or fullness in the mons pubis area following pregnancy or weight loss.
Mons pubis liposuction or a mons pubis lift may be possible in conjunction with a tummy tuck where appropriate.
Mons pubis treatment is not automatically included in the tummy tuck package and must be confirmed by the surgeon.
Can a Tummy Tuck Be Combined With Other Procedures?
A tummy tuck is often combined with other cosmetic procedures, including:

During your consultation in Thailand, the surgeon will:
Review your medical history
Examine your abdomen
Confirm the type of tummy tuck planned
Discuss any additional procedures
Confirm your final surgical plan
Your in-person consultation allows the surgeon to examine you and confirm the final surgical plan before you proceed with surgery.
Pre-Operative Assessment
Before surgery, the hospital will complete the medical assessments required for your procedure. Depending on your circumstances, these may include:
Blood tests

Chest X-ray
Physical examination
Medical history assessment
The exact tests required may vary depending on your age, medical history and hospital requirements.
Tummy Tuck Procedure
A tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia.
Your Patient Coordinator will be with you on the day of surgery to provide support.
The procedure generally involves:
1 Incision
A lower abdominal incision is made, with the length depending on the amount of excess tissue. A standard tummy tuck is generally from hip to hip.
Muscle Repair — Separated or weakened abdominal muscles are repaired and tightened.
Removal of Excess Skin and Fat — Excess tissue is removed and the remaining skin is repositioned.
Belly Button — In some cases the belly button is repositioned through an opening in the newly positioned abdominal skin.
2 Additional Procedures
If liposuction, mons pubis treatment or another procedure has been included in your surgical plan, this will be performed as appropriate.
3 Closure
The incisions are carefully closed with appropriate sutures. Drains may be used temporarily where required.
4 Recovery
You will be monitored in hospital following surgery and receive post-operative care according to your individual surgical plan.
Tummy Tuck Scarring
A tummy tuck creates a scar across the lower abdomen. The length and position depend on the amount of skin removed and the surgical technique.
A standard tummy tuck may also involve a scar around the belly button.
An extended tummy tuck or belt lipectomy may create a longer scar extending further around the sides and, in the case of a belt lipectomy, around the lower back.
Scars gradually fade in appearance as they mature.
