It is commonly performed on areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, arms, back, chin and neck. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure rather than a weight-loss treatment and is generally most suitable for patients who are at or near a stable weight but have areas of fat that have not responded sufficiently to diet and exercise. Understanding Liposuction
Liposuction removes excess fat from specific areas of the body using a small cannula inserted through small incisions.
It may be considered when you have:
● Localised areas of excess fat
● Fat deposits that have remained despite diet and exercise
● Areas of the body that appear disproportionate
● Good or reasonable skin elasticity
● A stable or relatively stable body weight
The aim is to improve body proportions and create a smoother, more defined contour.
Liposuction does not remove significant amounts of excess skin and is not a substitute for weight-loss surgery. If you have significant loose skin, your surgeon may recommend a different or additional procedure to achieve the result you are looking for.
Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction may be suitable if you:
Have localised areas of excess fat
Are at or near a stable weight
Have realistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve
Are in good general health
Have sufficient skin elasticity for the planned treatment
Are a non-smoker or willing to stop smoking before and after surgery

Liposuction Techniques
There are several liposuction techniques and technologies available. The technique used will depend on your individual anatomy, treatment areas, the amount and type of fat being treated, your skin quality and your surgeon's recommendation.
Tumescent Liposuction
Tumescent liposuction involves injecting a specialised solution into the treatment area before fat removal. The solution helps prepare the tissue for liposuction and can reduce bleeding and discomfort during the procedure. Tumescent fluid may be used as part of different liposuction techniques rather than being a completely separate type of liposuction.
VASER Liposuction
VASER uses ultrasound energy to assist in breaking up and removing fat. It may be used for body contouring in selected patients and treatment areas and may allow the surgeon to more precisely contour certain areas. Your surgeon will determine whether VASER is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses ultrasound energy to assist in loosening and emulsifying fat before it is removed through a cannula. UAL may be useful for certain treatment areas where the fat is denser or more fibrous. VASER is a form of ultrasound-assisted liposuction technology. Your surgeon will determine which approach is most appropriate for your treatment.
Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)
Power-assisted liposuction uses a specialised motorised cannula that rapidly moves to assist the surgeon in breaking up and removing fat. PAL may be useful when treating larger areas or where more extensive fat removal is required.
J-Plasma / Renuvion
J-Plasma, also known as Renuvion, is a technology that uses radiofrequency energy and helium plasma and may be used following liposuction in selected patients as part of body contouring. The technology is designed to deliver controlled energy to subcutaneous tissue. Your surgeon will determine whether J-Plasma / Renuvion is appropriate based on your individual anatomy, skin quality, treatment area and surgical plan. J-Plasma / Renuvion is not a substitute for surgical removal of significant excess skin. Patients with substantial loose or hanging skin may require a procedure such as a tummy tuck or another body-contouring procedure instead.
Liposuction With J-Plasma / Renuvion
For selected patients, J-Plasma / Renuvion may be performed following liposuction during the same procedure as part of the overall body-contouring plan. Liposuction removes targeted fat, while J-Plasma / Renuvion uses controlled energy beneath the skin to promote skin tightening and contraction following liposuction. The combination may be considered where the surgeon believes it may provide an appropriate contouring and skin-tightening benefit for the individual patient. J-Plasma / Renuvion is not suitable for everyone, and your surgeon will determine whether it should be included in your procedure.
Combination Techniques
Some patients may benefit from combining different liposuction technologies or treatments during the same procedure.
For example, your surgeon may recommend:

Liposuction Consultation
Before you travel, we collect your medical information and photographs and send these to your surgeon for a preliminary assessment. This allows the surgeon to review your case and provide an initial recommendation.
If you have questions about the surgeon's preliminary recommendation, we are happy to go back to the surgeon with your questions so you can feel comfortable and informed before you travel.
During your consultation in Thailand, your surgeon will:
Review your medical history
Examine the areas you would like treated
Assess your skin quality and elasticity
Discuss your goals and the recommended liposuction technique
Explain incision locations, expected scarring and recovery
Confirm your final surgical plan
Your in-person consultation allows the surgeon to examine you and confirm the final surgical plan before you proceed with surgery.
Pre-Operative Assessment
Before surgery, the hospital will complete the medical assessments required for your procedure. Depending on your circumstances, these may include:
Blood tests
ECG
Physical examination
Medical history assessment
Additional testing where required
The exact tests required may vary depending on your age, medical history, the extent of surgery and hospital requirements.
Liposuction Procedure
The exact procedure will depend on the areas being treated and the technique recommended by your surgeon. Liposuction may be performed under general anaesthesia, particularly when multiple or larger areas are being treated. In selected circumstances, local anaesthesia with sedation may be appropriate. The anaesthetic approach will be determined by your surgeon and anaesthetist based on your individual procedure and circumstances.
1. Anaesthesia
The appropriate anaesthetic is administered before surgery begins.
2. Incisions
The surgeon makes small incisions in carefully selected locations, generally positioned where possible within natural creases or less visible areas.
3. Preparation of the Treatment Area
Where appropriate, a specialised solution may be introduced into the treatment area to prepare the tissue for fat removal.
4. Fat Removal
A thin cannula is inserted through the small incisions and used to remove excess fat.
5. Body Contouring
The surgeon carefully contours the treated area to create a smoother and more balanced result.
6. Additional Technology
Where recommended, additional technology such as VASER, PAL or J-Plasma / Renuvion may be used as part of the surgical plan.
7. Closure
The small incisions may be closed or managed according to the surgical technique used. Dressings are then applied.
8. Recovery
You are monitored following surgery before being transferred to your hospital room.
Your Patient Coordinator will be there on the day of surgery to provide support, assist with communication and help ensure everything runs smoothly.
Liposuction Scarring
Liposuction requires small incisions to allow the cannula to enter the treatment area.
The incisions are generally small and positioned in discreet locations where possible.
Scars may initially appear more noticeable but generally fade and become less prominent as they mature.
The appearance of your scars will depend on the number and location of incisions, the technique used and your individual healing.
Liposuction and Weight Loss
Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. It is designed to remove localised areas of fat and improve body contour rather than significantly reduce overall body weight.
Patients who are significantly overweight may be advised to lose weight and reach a more stable weight before considering liposuction.
If you have substantial loose skin following significant weight loss, liposuction alone may not achieve the result you want.
Your surgeon will assess your skin and body contour and advise whether liposuction alone or another procedure may be more appropriate.
Liposuction and Loose Skin
Liposuction removes fat but does not remove significant excess skin.
If your skin has good elasticity, it may contract to some degree following fat removal.
However, if you have substantial loose or hanging skin, particularly following significant weight loss, your surgeon may recommend an additional procedure such as a tummy tuck or another body-contouring procedure.

After your hospital stay, you will return to your hotel to continue your recovery. You will have follow-up appointments with your surgeon at the hospital, and your Patient Coordinator will assist with this and keep you informed.
