Arm Lift Techniques
Every patient has different levels of skin laxity, fat distribution and arm anatomy. Your surgeon will determine the most appropriate technique during your consultation.
Traditional or Full Arm Lift
A traditional arm lift, also known as a full brachioplasty, is generally used when there is a significant amount of excess skin along the upper arm. The incision usually extends from the armpit towards the elbow along the inner or less visible aspect of the arm. The surgeon removes the appropriate amount of excess skin and tightens the remaining tissue to improve the arm contour. This technique provides a more significant correction but also results in a longer scar.
Extended Arm Lift
An extended arm lift uses a longer incision than a traditional arm lift to allow the surgeon to address excess skin extending beyond the upper arm and towards the side of the chest. This technique may be considered for patients with more extensive skin laxity, particularly following significant weight loss. Your surgeon will determine whether an extended arm lift is appropriate based on the distribution of your excess skin and your individual anatomy.
Liposuction
Liposuction may be appropriate for patients who have localised excess fat but good skin elasticity and little loose skin. Liposuction removes excess fat but does not remove significant amounts of loose skin.
Liposuction Combined With an Arm Lift
In some patients, liposuction may be combined with an arm lift to remove localised areas of excess fat and refine the overall arm contour. However, combining procedures is not appropriate for every patient. Your surgeon will assess your skin quality, fat distribution and the extent of surgery required before determining whether liposuction can safely be combined with an arm lift.
Arm Lift vs Liposuction
An arm lift and liposuction are different procedures. An arm lift primarily removes excess skin and tightens the remaining tissue. Liposuction removes excess fat but does not remove significant amounts of loose skin.
If you have significant loose skin following weight loss, an arm lift may be more appropriate. If you have good skin elasticity and your main concern is localised fat, liposuction may be sufficient.
Some patients may benefit from combining both procedures where appropriate. Your surgeon will determine the most suitable treatment based on your individual anatomy and goals.

Before surgery, the hospital will complete the medical assessments required for your procedure. Depending on your age, medical history and individual circumstances, these may include:

Arm Lift Procedure
Arm lift surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. Your Patient Coordinator will be with you on the day of surgery to provide support.
1 Incisions
The surgeon will determine the most appropriate incision pattern based on the amount and location of excess skin. For a traditional arm lift, the incision generally extends from the armpit towards the elbow. An extended arm lift may require a longer incision extending towards the side of the chest.
2 Additional Procedures
If liposuction forms part of your surgical plan, it may be performed to remove localised areas of excess fat and refine the overall contour.
3 Closure
The incisions are carefully closed with appropriate sutures. Drains may be used temporarily where required.
4 Recovery
You will be monitored in hospital following surgery and receive post-operative care according to your individual surgical plan.
Compression Garments
A compression garment is generally recommended following arm lift surgery to support the treated areas and help manage swelling during recovery.
Compression garments are not included in the standard package unless specifically stated in your quotation.
Your surgical team will advise you on the appropriate garment and how long it should be worn.
Arm Lift Scarring
Arm lift surgery requires incisions and therefore results in scars. The location and extent of scarring depend on the surgical technique required and the amount of excess skin being removed.
With a traditional arm lift, the scar generally extends from the armpit towards the elbow along the inner or less visible aspect of the arm.
