What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape and modify the structure of the nose.
Depending on your individual anatomy and goals, surgery may involve:
● Reshaping the nasal bones
● Altering the nasal bridge

● Changing the projection or rotation of the tip

What Can Rhinoplasty Address?
Depending on your individual anatomy, rhinoplasty may address several different areas of the nose.
Dorsal Hump
A prominent hump on the nasal bridge can be reduced to create a smoother nasal profile.
Low or Flat Nasal Bridge
Augmentation rhinoplasty may increase the height or projection of the nasal bridge where appropriate.
Wide Nasal Bridge

Tipplasty
Tipplasty, also known as tip rhinoplasty or tip surgery, is a procedure focused specifically on reshaping and refining the nasal tip. It may be suitable for patients who are primarily concerned with the appearance or position of their nasal tip rather than the entire nose.
Depending on your anatomy, tipplasty may address:
● A bulbous or rounded nasal tip
● A wide nasal tip
● A poorly defined nasal tip
● A drooping nasal tip
● An over-projected nasal tip
● An asymmetrical nasal tip
● The projection or rotation of the nasal tip. The surgeon may reshape or reposition the cartilage supporting the nasal tip to improve its definition, projection or position.
Tipplasty may be performed on its own or combined with rhinoplasty, alarplasty or other nasal procedures. If the nasal bridge and other structures already suit your facial proportions, the surgeon may determine that tipplasty alone is appropriate.
If changes to other areas of the nose are also required, a more comprehensive rhinoplasty may be recommended. Your surgeon will assess your entire nose and facial proportions before determining whether tipplasty alone or a combination of procedures is most appropriate.
Types of Rhinoplasty
There is no single rhinoplasty technique that is appropriate for every patient. Your surgeon will determine the best approach based on your anatomy, the changes required and your desired outcome.
Open Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty involves an external incision across the columella, together with internal incisions inside the nostrils. This approach provides greater access to the underlying nasal structures and may be recommended where more detailed or complex reshaping is required. The external incision is carefully positioned and the resulting scar generally becomes less noticeable as it heals.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions made entirely inside the nostrils. There is therefore no external incision across the columella. A closed approach may be appropriate for certain patients where the required changes can be achieved without an external incision. Your surgeon will determine whether an open or closed approach is appropriate.
Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty, also known as Piezo rhinoplasty, uses specialised ultrasonic technology to reshape the nasal bones. Where appropriate, this technique may be considered for dorsal hump reduction, nasal bone reshaping, bridge narrowing, certain forms of nasal asymmetry and selected revision procedures. Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is not appropriate for every patient. Your surgeon will determine whether ultrasonic technology is suitable for your individual surgical plan.
Augmentation Rhinoplasty
Augmentation rhinoplasty is designed to increase the height, projection or definition of selected areas of the nose, most commonly the nasal bridge. It may be suitable for patients who feel their bridge is too low, flat or lacks definition. Depending on your anatomy and surgical requirements, the surgeon may use an appropriate implant or your own cartilage. The surgeon will determine the most appropriate material and technique for your individual nose.
Alarplasty
Alarplasty, also known as alar base reduction, is designed to reduce or reshape the width of the nostril base. It may be performed on its own, with rhinoplasty, with tipplasty, with augmentation rhinoplasty or as part of a broader nasal reshaping procedure. Your surgeon will assess your nostril shape, nasal base and overall facial proportions before determining whether alarplasty is appropriate.
Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is performed following previous nose surgery and may be required for further aesthetic refinement, correction of asymmetry or structural problems, improvement following an unsatisfactory previous result, reconstruction of altered nasal structures or improvement of breathing. Revision rhinoplasty is generally more complex than primary rhinoplasty. Additional cartilage grafting or other reconstructive techniques may sometimes be required. A detailed surgeon assessment is essential.
Septorhinoplasty
Septorhinoplasty combines cosmetic reshaping of the nose with correction of structural problems involving the nasal septum. It may be recommended for patients who have both aesthetic concerns and breathing difficulties caused by structural problems such as a deviated septum. Your surgeon will determine whether septoplasty or other functional correction is required.
Rhinoplasty Procedures Can Be Combined
Rhinoplasty is not necessarily a single technique. Depending on your anatomy and goals, your surgeon may recommend combining different approaches or procedures.

Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty is generally performed under general anaesthesia. However, some smaller nasal procedures, such as tipplasty or alarplasty when performed on their own, may be performed under local anaesthetic. Your surgeon will determine the appropriate anaesthesia based on the procedure being performed and your individual circumstances. The exact procedure will depend on your surgical plan.
1. Anaesthesia
You will be placed under general anaesthesia before surgery begins.
2. Incisions
The surgeon will use either an open or closed approach depending on your surgical plan.
3. Nasal Bone and Cartilage Reshaping
The surgeon reshapes the underlying nasal bones and cartilage according to the planned changes.
4. Bridge Reshaping
A dorsal hump may be reduced, or the bridge may be narrowed, reshaped or augmented depending on your anatomy.
5. Nasal Tip Refinement
The cartilage supporting the nasal tip may be reshaped or repositioned to alter its definition, projection or position.
6. Tipplasty
Where tipplasty forms part of your surgical plan, the surgeon will refine or reshape the nasal tip according to your individual anatomy.
7. Augmentation
Where augmentation is required, an appropriate implant or cartilage graft may be used to increase nasal bridge height or projection.
8. Alarplasty
Where included in your surgical plan, the nostril base may be reduced or reshaped.
9. Septal Correction
Where septorhinoplasty is required, the surgeon may correct structural problems involving the nasal septum.
10. Closure
The incisions are carefully closed with appropriate sutures.
11. Recovery
You will be monitored in hospital following surgery and receive post-operative care according to your individual surgical plan.
Rhinoplasty Scarring
Scarring depends on the surgical technique used. With closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils and there is no external scar.
With open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the columella. Alarplasty creates scars at the nostril base where the incisions are made.
Tipplasty scarring depends on the surgical approach used. Where a closed approach is appropriate, the incisions are inside the nose. An open approach involves an incision across the columella.
Scars initially appear more noticeable but generally mature and become less visible over time. Your surgeon will explain the expected incision locations and scarring during your consultation.
