Male Breast Reduction Techniques
There are several surgical approaches to male breast reduction. Your surgeon will determine which technique is appropriate based on your chest anatomy and the type and amount of tissue present.
Liposuction-Only Male Breast Reduction
Liposuction may be suitable when the enlargement is primarily caused by excess fatty tissue and the skin has sufficient elasticity to contract following fat removal. Small incisions are made and a cannula is used to remove excess fat and contour the chest. Liposuction alone does not remove firm glandular breast tissue.
Mastectomy / Glandular Tissue Excision
Where enlarged breast tissue is primarily glandular, the surgeon may need to remove the tissue surgically. This is sometimes referred to as mastectomy for gynecomastia, although it is not the same procedure as a cancer-related mastectomy. An incision is generally made around the areola or in another appropriate location to allow the surgeon to remove the excess glandular tissue.
Mastectomy and VASER Liposuction
Some patients have both glandular tissue and excess fat. In these cases, the surgeon may combine surgical removal of the glandular tissue with liposuction to contour the surrounding chest. Where appropriate, VASER liposuction may be used to assist with chest contouring.
Skin Removal
Patients with significant excess skin, particularly following substantial weight loss, may require additional skin removal. The incision pattern depends on the amount of excess skin and the individual surgical plan. Not every patient requires skin removal. Your surgeon will determine the appropriate approach during your consultation.
Male Breast Reduction vs Liposuction
Liposuction and male breast reduction are not necessarily the same procedure. Liposuction primarily removes excess fat.
Male breast reduction may also require the surgical removal of glandular breast tissue. If your gynecomastia is caused mainly by fat, liposuction may be sufficient.
If firm glandular tissue is present beneath the nipple or within the breast, liposuction alone may not produce the desired result. Your surgeon will assess the composition of your chest and recommend the appropriate technique.
Male Breast Reduction and Weight Loss
Weight loss can reduce the amount of fat in the chest, but it does not always eliminate enlarged male breasts.
If glandular breast tissue is present, weight loss will not remove this tissue. Significant weight loss can also leave excess skin around the chest.
For these reasons, surgery may be considered once your weight is stable and you have achieved the result possible through diet and exercise.

Liposuction. Liposuction generally involves only small incisions, resulting in relatively small scars.
Glandular Tissue Removal. When glandular tissue is removed, the incision is often positioned around the edge of the areola where possible.
Skin Removal. If significant skin removal is required, longer scars may be necessary. Your surgeon will explain the expected incision pattern and scarring during your consultation. Scars initially appear more noticeable but generally mature and become less visible over time.
