Breast Reduction Surgical Techniques
There are several surgical approaches that may be used for breast reduction and lift surgery. The technique selected depends on your breast size and shape, the amount of tissue and skin that needs to be removed, your skin quality, nipple position and the degree of lift required.
Vertical or Lollipop Technique
This technique involves an incision around the areola with a vertical incision extending down towards the breast crease. It may be suitable for some patients requiring a moderate reduction and lift, depending on their breast size, shape and skin quality.
Anchor or Wise-Pattern Technique
For larger breast reductions or patients with significant excess tissue and skin, the surgeon may use an anchor or Wise-pattern incision around the areola, vertically down the breast and along the breast crease. This allows a greater amount of tissue and skin to be removed while reshaping and lifting the breast.
Breast Tissue Removal and Reshaping
The surgeon removes the amount of excess breast tissue, fat and skin required according to your individual surgical plan. The remaining tissue is reshaped and positioned to create a smaller, lifted and more proportionate breast.
Nipple and Areola Repositioning
The nipple and areola are generally repositioned higher on the breast to create a more natural and balanced position.
Areola Reduction
The areola may be reduced in size where appropriate. Your surgeon will assess whether this should form part of your surgical plan.
Your surgeon will determine the most appropriate surgical technique based on your individual anatomy and the amount of reduction required. Not every technique or additional adjustment is suitable for every patient.

Pre-Operative Assessment

Breast Reduction & Lift Procedure
Breast reduction and lift surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The exact surgical approach will depend on your breast anatomy, the amount of reduction required and your surgeon's recommended technique.
1. Anaesthesia
General anaesthesia is administered before surgery begins.
2. Incisions
The surgeon makes the planned incisions according to the surgical technique selected for you.
3. Removal of Excess Tissue
Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts.
4. Breast Reshaping
The remaining breast tissue is reshaped and repositioned to create a smaller and more lifted breast.
5. Nipple and Areola Repositioning
The nipple and areola are generally repositioned to a higher and more natural position. The areola may also be reduced in size where appropriate.
6. Symmetry and Final Contouring
The surgeon assesses the breast shape and symmetry before completing the procedure.
7. Closure
The incisions are carefully closed with sutures and appropriate dressings are applied.
8. Hospital Recovery
You are monitored following surgery and remain in hospital according to your surgeon's recommended recovery plan. Your Patient Coordinator will be there on the day of surgery to provide support, assist with communication and help ensure everything runs smoothly.
Breast Reduction Scarring
Breast reduction requires incisions, so scarring is unavoidable. Depending on the surgical technique, scars may be located around the areola, vertically from the areola towards the breast crease, and along the breast crease.
The final scar pattern will depend on the technique required for your individual breast reduction.
Scars may initially appear red, raised or more noticeable before gradually becoming less prominent as they mature.
Scar appearance varies between patients and depends on factors including your skin characteristics, healing, genetics and surgical technique.
