Gender Affirmation Surgery Requirements
Before travelling to Thailand for genital gender affirmation surgery, there are important requirements that must be met.
Mental Health Assessment
Patients undergoing genital gender affirmation surgery must have undergone the appropriate assessment with a qualified mental health professional in their home country before travelling to Thailand.
You will need to provide the required supporting documentation for review before your surgery can be confirmed
This assessment is an important part of ensuring that you understand the permanent nature of the procedure, the expected outcomes, the risks and the long-term aftercare involved.
Hormone Therapy
For the genital surgery pathway arranged through MediCation Tours, patients are required to have been undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy for at least 12 months before surgery, unless your treating medical team has advised that hormone therapy is medically inappropriate.
You should be able to provide evidence of your hormone therapy history where required.
Hormone therapy must be established before you travel to Thailand. It is not something that is started as part of your surgical package.

Specialised Hairless Vaginoplasty Technique
One of the specialised techniques available through our surgical team is full-length peritoneal flap vaginoplasty, which is designed to create a hairless neovaginal canal using peritoneal tissue throughout the vaginal depth.
This is particularly relevant for patients who have concerns about hair-bearing genital skin being used inside the neovagina or who have limited suitable genital skin available.
The technique uses a vascularised peritoneal flap taken from the abdominal cavity to create the lining of the neovaginal canal.
Because the peritoneum is a mucosal-type lining rather than hair-bearing external skin, the technique offers the potential for a hairless internal vaginal canal without relying on extensive genital skin for the full length of the canal.
Published clinical work on this technique has reported a series of patients undergoing full-length peritoneal flap vaginoplasty, with the authors describing a mucosal surface, elasticity and self-lubrication of the neovaginal lining.
Why Patients May Consider a Hairless:
The technique may be particularly useful for patients with:

How Vaginoplasty Is Performed
The exact surgical steps depend on the technique selected.
In general, gender-affirming vaginoplasty may involve:
1. General Anaesthesia
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.
2. Genital Reconstruction
The surgeon removes or reshapes the existing genital structures according to the planned surgical technique.
3. Creation of the Neovaginal Canal
The surgeon creates the vaginal canal using the selected tissue technique. For a peritoneal flap procedure, tissue from the abdominal cavity is used to create the internal lining of the neovagina.
4. Clitoral Reconstruction
Part of the glans is generally preserved and reshaped to create a clitoris while maintaining the appropriate nerve and blood supply wherever possible.
5. Vulvar Reconstruction
The surgeon creates the labia and external vulvar structures using available genital tissue.
6. Urethral Reconstruction
The urethra is shortened and positioned appropriately to allow urination from the reconstructed vulva.
7. Closure
The surgical sites are carefully closed and appropriate dressings and post-operative measures are applied.
8. Initial Recovery
You will remain in hospital for monitoring and post-operative care before continuing your recovery in Thailand.
Vaginoplasty Recovery and Dilation
Recovery following vaginoplasty is significant and requires commitment to your surgeon's post-operative instructions.
Your initial hospital stay may be approximately 7–9 nights, depending on the surgical technique, your recovery and your surgeon's recommendations.
After leaving hospital, you will continue recovering at your hotel before being cleared to travel home.
Dilation
