What is Breast Revision Surgery?

Breast revision surgery is a procedure designed to correct or improve the results of a previous breast augmentation or breast surgery. This surgery may be performed for various reasons, including correcting complications, adjusting the size or shape of breast implants, or addressing changes to the breasts due to aging, weight fluctuations, or other factors.

Breast revision is typically performed when a patient is dissatisfied with the results of their initial breast augmentation or if complications arise. The goal is to restore or enhance the appearance of the breasts, offering improved symmetry, shape, and overall satisfaction.

Breast Revision Procedure Pre-Operative Tests

Before undergoing breast revision surgery, certain tests and evaluations are essential to ensure your safety and readiness for the procedure. Here’s an overview of the standard pre-op tests you'll likely undergo when you arrive at the hospital in Thailand:

  • Blood Tests: These tests are critical for assessing your overall health. They screen for infections, check your blood count to ensure you’re not anemic, and evaluate your blood's ability to clot properly, reducing the risk of complications during surgery.

  • Chest X-Ray: A chest X-ray helps evaluate the health of your heart and lungs, ensuring that they are functioning well and ready for the stress of surgery.

  • Mammogram: A mammogram is used to check for any underlying issues in the breast tissue before surgery. Women over 40 are typically required to have one to rule out any hidden conditions or abnormalities.

  • ECG (Electrocardiogram): An ECG is performed to assess the electrical activity of your heart. It ensures your heart is healthy and functioning properly, minimizing the risk of complications during surgery, especially if you have a history of heart concerns.

  • Physical Exam: A thorough physical exam will be performed by your doctor to ensure you’re physically fit for surgery. The doctor will evaluate your general health and address any medical concerns that could affect your surgery or recovery.

These pre-op tests are crucial for making sure you’re in optimal health for the procedure, and they help to minimize any potential risks.

Breast Revision Procedure Overview

Breast revision surgery is similar to the initial breast augmentation procedure, but the approach may vary depending on the specific issue being addressed. It is generally performed under general anesthesia and can take several hours.

  1. Incision: The surgeon will make an incision around the areola, beneath the breast, or in the axillary (armpit) area, depending on the type of revision needed.

  2. Addressing Complications or Concerns: The surgeon will remove or replace the implants, remove scar tissue, reposition the implants, or adjust the breast tissue to improve the appearance.

    • For capsular contracture, the surgeon may remove the hardened capsule of scar tissue.

    • For ruptured implants, the old implants are replaced with new ones.

    • Implant size or type changes: The surgeon may exchange the current implants for new ones, adjusting the size or material (e.g., saline or silicone).

  3. Breast lift (if needed): If the patient has experienced sagging or changes to breast tissue, a breast lift may be performed alongside the revision surgery to restore a youthful, lifted appearance.

  4. Closing the Incisions: The incisions are carefully closed with sutures, and the breasts are supported with a special surgical bra or compression garment to reduce swelling and aid in healing.

Aftercare:

Post-surgery, you’ll need to follow your surgeon's aftercare instructions, which includes wearing a support bra, avoiding strenuous activities, and scheduling follow-up visits to ensure proper healing.

Recovery:

  • Most patients are able to return to light activities within a few days but should avoid strenuous exercise for about 4 to 6 weeks.

  • A follow-up visit will be scheduled to monitor healing and ensure the best results.

Results:

The results of breast revision surgery are generally long-lasting. However, factors like aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and gravity may affect the appearance of the breasts over time.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. Why would I need breast revision surgery?

Breast revision may be needed for several reasons, including:

  • Implant complications: rupture, leakage, or capsular contracture.

  • Desire to change implant size: either to increase or decrease the size of the implants.

  • Aesthetic concerns: asymmetry, shape issues, or dissatisfaction with the previous result.

  • Implant removal: if you want to remove your implants entirely or replace them with a different type.

  • Changes in breast appearance: due to weight fluctuations, aging, or pregnancy.

2. What can I expect during the recovery process?

Recovery varies depending on the extent of the surgery, but general guidelines include:

  • Swelling and bruising: Expect swelling and bruising, which usually resolves within a few weeks.

  • Compression garment: You will wear a surgical bra or compression garment to support your breasts and reduce swelling.

  • Pain management: You may experience some discomfort, but pain medication will help manage this.

  • Activity restrictions: Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and exercise for 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Follow-up visits: Regular check-ups with your surgeon are important to monitor healing and address any concerns.

3. Will there be visible scars after breast revision surgery?

Yes, there will be some scarring, but it is generally placed around the areola, along the breast crease, or in the armpit, depending on the incisions made. Scars typically fade over time but may remain visible, especially if significant changes were made or if previous scars were involved.

4. How long does breast revision surgery take?

Breast revision surgery usually takes about 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. If additional procedures like a breast lift are involved, the surgery may take longer.

5. When can I see the final results of breast revision surgery?

The final results of breast revision surgery are typically visible after the swelling subsides and the implants settle into their new position, usually within several months. However, immediate improvements are often seen after the surgery.

6. Can I have a breast revision if I want a different size or type of implant?

Yes, one of the most common reasons for breast revision is to change the size or type of implant. Whether you want to increase or decrease the size of your implants, or switch from saline to silicone, the surgeon can help you achieve your desired outcome.

7. Will breast revision surgery affect my ability to breastfeed?

Breast revision surgery may affect the ability to breastfeed, particularly if the surgery involves repositioning the nipple or removing a significant amount of tissue. However, many women are still able to breastfeed after revision surgery.

8. How long will the results of breast revision surgery last?

The results of breast revision surgery are generally long-lasting, but factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and gravity may affect the breasts over time. With proper care and maintenance, the results can be maintained for many years.
