Planning Cosmetic Surgery in Thailand? Read This Before You Pack Your Bags

Booking cosmetic surgery in Thailand is an exciting milestone. You've researched procedures, compared surgeons, and finally decided to take the next step towards achieving your goals.
Then comes the practical question almost every patient asks:
"Am I actually prepared for the trip?"
Packing is only one part of preparing for cosmetic surgery overseas. The truth is, a little planning before you board the plane can make your experience smoother, your recovery more comfortable, and your journey far less stressful.
At MediCation Tours, we've helped hundreds of clients from New Zealand and Australia travel to Thailand for cosmetic surgery. Here are some of the most valuable tips we share before every patient flies.
1. Pack for Recovery, Not for a Holiday
Thailand is famous for beautiful beaches, shopping, and vibrant nightlife—but if you're travelling for surgery, your priority will be recovery.
Many first-time clients pack far too many outfits, only to wear the same comfortable clothes throughout their stay.
Loose-fitting clothing is your best friend after surgery. Depending on your procedure, swelling and tenderness are completely normal, so choose soft, breathable fabrics that are easy to put on and take off.
If you're having breast surgery or an arm lift, front-opening shirts, zip-up hoodies, and button-up pyjamas are much easier to wear than tops that need to be pulled over your head.
For tummy tucks, liposuction, body contouring procedures, loose joggers, lounge pants, stretchy shorts, or comfortable dresses will make moving around much easier.
A good rule of thumb is simple: if it's not comfortable before surgery, it definitely won't be afterwards.
2. Don't Forget the Things You Can't Easily Replace
Thailand has excellent hospitals and pharmacies, but it's still important to bring your regular prescription medications with you.
Pack enough medication for your entire trip, keep everything in its original packaging, and carry it in your hand luggage. If you take controlled medications, ask your doctor for a letter before travelling.
If your surgeon has recommended a compression garment, make sure you've organised it before you leave for Thailand. Compression garments play an important role in reducing swelling, supporting healing, and helping you recover comfortably after procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, breast surgery, and other body contouring procedures.
If you don't have a compression garment before you travel, don't worry—you can usually purchase one at the hospital. Just be aware that the sizing may be on the smaller side, so many clients prefer to organize their own in advance for the best fit and comfort.
Having everything ready before you leave means one less thing to think about while you're recovering.
3. Recovery Is More About Rest Than Sightseeing
One of the biggest misconceptions about travelling for cosmetic surgery is that you'll spend your recovery exploring Bangkok.
While Thailand has plenty to see, your body needs time to heal.
Most clients enjoy relaxing at their hotel, attending follow-up appointments, taking short walks, and gradually getting back to normal activities. It's not the time to fill your itinerary with shopping centers, day trips, or long sightseeing tours.
Bringing a few comforts from home—such as a Kindle, downloaded movies, podcasts, headphones, or your favorite skincare products—can make those quieter recovery days much more enjoyable.
Remember, giving your body the rest it needs is one of the best ways to achieve the outcome you're hoping for.
4. Thailand Is Affordable—But Budget for the Unexpected
One of the reasons New Zealand and Australian clients choose cosmetic surgery in Thailand is the excellent value for money.
Even so, it's worth setting aside a little extra spending money for meals, snacks, pharmacy items, transportation, or any personal purchases during your stay.
We recommend having around 5,000 THB available for day-to-day expenses (approximately NZD $300 or AUD $250, depending on exchange rates). This is generally enough for meals, drinks, small purchases, and personal items during your stay.
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Bangkok. Many travellers also choose to use a travel card such as Wise to access Thai Baht conveniently and potentially reduce international transaction fees.
We suggest carrying a small amount of Thai Baht for smaller purchases, markets, taxis, or places that may not accept cards.
5. Follow Your Surgeon's Advice—Not Social Media
If you've spent time researching cosmetic surgery online, you've probably come across thousands of recovery tips on TikTok, Facebook, or online forums.
While some experiences can be helpful, remember that every patient, every procedure, and every recovery is different.
Your surgeon understands your medical history and procedure far better than anyone on the internet. If you ever have questions during recovery, follow your surgeon's instructions and speak with your patient coordinator rather than relying on conflicting advice from social media.
6. Having Local Support Makes a Huge Difference
Travelling overseas for surgery can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first visit to Thailand. Many clients choose to work with a medical tourism company because they want more than just a surgery booking — they want guidance, support, and someone they can rely on throughout their journey.
At MediCation Tours, we coordinate your experience from start to finish. Before you travel, we help you choose the right surgeon, organise your hospital appointments, accommodation, and transfers, and ensure everything is planned before you arrive.
When you arrive in Thailand, our support continues. Your patient coordinator will be there to assist you on your surgery day, helping you navigate the hospital process and ensuring you know what to expect. Throughout your stay, our team is available to answer questions, provide guidance, and support you during your recovery.
Having someone familiar with the process and available locally provides valuable peace of mind, especially when you’re recovering away from home.
A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way
Preparing for cosmetic surgery in Thailand isn't about packing the biggest suitcase—it's about arriving confident, organized, and ready to focus on your recovery.
By planning ahead, bringing the right essentials, following your surgeon's advice, and having experienced local support, you'll be giving yourself the best possible start to a smooth and successful surgical journey.
Whether you're considering a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, facelift, liposuction, mummy makeover, or another cosmetic procedure, the right preparation can make all the difference.
